Remembrance Day

I've lost touch with my old unit. And we're probably better off for it, as we don't need the reminder.
But the public does. The average civilian needs to know *some* of the hardship those who protect them endure, to be thankful that there are strangers who are driven to protect their country - and their fellow citizens - against the world.

Weekend painting for a comic I've got going in the Webtoons / Line comic competition over HERE

Please check it out [they've got lots of webcomics up to read, not just in the competition], and it's easy to make an account.. to vote you have be logged in - and I'd love for you to vote for my comic. As much as the 30K USD would come in handy, more importantly, I'm getting a comic done!!

Normally I hate anything that has to do with `popularity contest` type stuff, but this actually makes sense - a company that needs readership would  naturally want to hire someone who's making stuff people like.
Doesn't mean I like it, but at least it makes logical, business sense.

Pokemon Gajinka collab pt.1

Not knowing much beyond the general pop-culture references to Pokemon, I'm glad the person who put this collaboration together made a giant list.

So, based off the Gible, here's my first one.

Not bad for concept-to-painted in about 4 hours, I think.

Random words = Random picture

I put out a tweet that I would mix the first three responses into ...something.
So with "Snuffleupagus", "Zombie Alien Pirate" and "Australian Tallywhacker" to work with, I painted up the following critter:

Sneak Peak

These characters and stories have been percolating, formulating and coagulating in my head for years and are finally ready to see the light of day. In a very rough form before being polished up, of course. Don't want to let too many cats out of the bag, but yes, those are anthropomorphic veggies.

My aim is to have 100 pages of 2 different stories set before I get them out there, but we live in a world where everything is teased and trailered and leaked to death, so here's some roughs that are not indicative of the final product, as things may change for better fit, story-telling purposes, and the rest of that stuff.

Probably set it up as a webcomic, though I'd love to print it at some point when it's all done.

Lucky for me, I think in cartoons and action-sequences, so most of this is easy, it's the slow, talk-y parts [like the diner] that are gonna have me scratching my head.

Yoda Painting

Here's a digitally-painted Yoda.

Painting metal is always a bit of a task - all metal is reflective, catching and disbursing light and shadow and distorting images and such, and the circular lightsaber handle is an interesting exercise in painting polished metal.

If not for Scott Johnson's Intro to Digital Painting course, I would have wound up doing this a lot differently - and it wouldn't have looked this good. If you're looking to learn how to paint - digitally or on a physical canvas, his course over at Comic Experience is worth every penny.

Some older and newer stuff

Working on some personal projects, haven't posted in too long, and figured I'd share some things, 'cause why not, right?

A character I tend to doodle when I'm either having some fun for myself or trying to figure something out.

A very rough version of what was going to be the cover for one storyline, but I decided to go with something else.

A single page made up from a bit of a story a friend sent me - the first couple of paragraphs, anyhow. Apparently I got right into my friend's head of what they were thinking of when they were writing.. which, to me, is a good sign.  I tend to think in cartoons / animation, so I guess it helped for once!

Flatting

I'm not educated in the lingo of publishing, illustration or arts.
I know what I know because I've had to learn it. If you'd've asked me what a flatter was years ago, my answer would've had more to do with laying carpet than comics.

Personally, I find flatting takes the most time, and shading, blending, low-light and highlighting things are what I'm quicker at.
